Sometime in January, we Snowbirds begin to think longingly of our Singer Island, FL, condos and begin making preparations to leave the bitter cold of our northern states and head south. Promises of 75 degree weather, fresh tropical breezes, and lots of sunshine sound like heaven.
As we sit in our Seattle house and gaze at the dreary drizzle out the window, we are more than ready to rejoin our friends that we made in Singer Island and begin to enjoy the wide, white sand beaches and sun.
Our Singer Island Condo Has Everything We Need
Although we have a timeshare for only a few weeks, we do not need to pack much. The completely furnished condo comes with a fully equipped kitchen, right down to the spices and staples. Bedding, towels, and even weekly cleaning service are all part of the unit. We can even barbeque right on our own deck. Our corner unit has a sweeping view to the south of Palm Beach Shores, the Atlantic on the east and Lake Worth to the west.
Water, Water Everywhere
Once a freshwater lake separated from the Atlantic by a narrow strip of land, Lake Worth was opened to the sea when inlets were dug to allow boats to have a safe harbor. The first inlet was dug in 1917, creating the island, and a channel, the Intracoastal Waterway is deep enough for cruise ships to enter the port.
The flatter water of the protected lake makes wonderful boating, jet skiing, and other water sports a popular recreation. The material dredged from the inlets and channel was piled on a shoal, creating another island, Peanut Island.
Peanut Island is a Playground
One of our favorite places to spend time is on Peanut Island. In Seattle, we kayak on Puget Sound, but here the warm water makes kayaking even more fun. We rent kayaks on Peanut Island and paddle around looking for Florida birds as well as those wise birds from the north that like to come south too. We also enjoy snorkeling, and usually take a picnic. Camping is even allowed on Peanut Island.
South Florida Recreation: Deep Sea Fishing or Shopping?
The day our guy friends decide to go deep sea fishing is the day we women head for Palm Beach to do a little shopping. Crossing over Blue Heron Bridge, we are quickly at Riviera Mall. There we can have lunch and shop 'til we drop, A new, soon-to-be opened mall on Singer Island that is huge will satisfy even the most diehard shopper in our group.
As I stuff my last favorite tank top into my suitcase and zip it shut, I sigh in anticipation of our upcoming weeks at our Singer Island, FL, condo. I glance out my window at the dripping, dense forest of Douglas fir and blackberry thickets, and know that when I return, the Seattle spring will be in full bloom with daffodils, dogwood, and tulips. And it will be good to be home again.
